    The primary drug prevention in Quebec has many programs that encourage preventing youth from using drugs. Athough here are many primary prevention programs in this province, I chose to focus on two programs that support youth and are areas that a social service worker could benefit working at.Two of the many primary prevention programs in Quebec are ‘Centre jeunesse de Québec’(Youth centre of Quebec) and ‘Regroupement des Maisons de jeunes du Québec’ (Youth grouping houses in Quebec).

    Regroupement des Maisons de jeunes du Québec’(Youth grouping houses in Quebec)
    The ‘Regroupement des Maisons de jeunes du Québec’(Youth grouping houses in Quebec) is a program held at school during school hours, and “the young people in the program talk about violence and substance abuse prevention, anger management, and healthy peer and family relationships” (Substance). The mission of this program is to promote a “promising approach designed to enhance the inner strength and resiliency of young people and to prevent them from using drugs and resorting to violence” (Substance). This is a very promising program because of the fact that it is held in schools across the province which means that more youth will be educated on the risk factors of using drugs along with other important factors of life like family relationships. The program started in 1980 and has helped “49,000 young people aged between 12 and 18 years [of age].(Substance)”

    A Social Service Worker would be a great help to both of these organizations. Social service workers could help emphasize the importance of the prevention of substance abuse because they will be able to participate in workshops along with meetings with the administrators of the programs to help keep their activities current. Helping facilitate new programs is another way in which a social service worker can greatly contribute to these primary prevention programs. One of the main methods of promoting this program would be to have guess speakers talk about the dangers and long term effects of drugs in elementary and high schools so that youth in each community will be educated in about drugs and have a better chance at refraining from using them in the future.

    The ‘Centre jeunesse de Québec’(Youth Centre of Quebec) program “targets youth aged 10 to 15 years who had been identified as substance abusers and at risk of becoming involved in criminal activity”(Regroupement). It was put in place in three youth centres in Quebec using the “mediation approach to help participants and their parents recognize and mitigate the risk factors associated with anti-social behaviour, drug use and negative peer influence”(Regroupement). This is a great method of helping youth make the right decisions when it comes to drugs despite of their previous life choices and is a very positive and welcoming space for the youth to come receive support.

    While there are many primary prevention programs put in place for British Columbian students, I chose to focus on 2 programs that I feel cover the widest age range, are specific to primary prevention and are areas a social service worker could work in.
    Developed by the Centre for Addictions Research of British Columbia, iMinds is a program to help students in Grades 4-10 that allows students to become aware of drugs, drugs effects on themselves and their lifestyle, and ways to live a healthy lifestyle. IMinds encourages some basic guidelines such as, stay neutral, and insist on a non-hostile environment, to be followed to promote the students learning and encourage them to be honest and open about the questions they may have.

    Making Decisions is another British Columbian Primary Prevention Program that was founded by the Alcohol and Drug Education Services (ADES). This program focuses on students in Grades 4-9 and teaches students to make informed decisions regarding drug and alcohol use. This program highlights knowledge, confidence, practical skills, and how to deal with pressures that may lead to substance abuse. This program encourages connections with family, friends and school to prevent/delay substance abuse. A Social Service Worker could help to emphasize the importance of learning about these skills to prevent substance abuse. Workshops, informal meetings, assemblies and other forms of communicating can really help promote this program and increase rate of success in prevention among students.

    The roles that Social Service Workers play in primary prevention programs can be large or small depending on the rate of need there is in the community. When there is high demand for primary prevention Social Service Workers can facilitate the program, promote programs to schools, and constantly help keep the programs current and relevant. Social Service workers can create new programs and emphasize what has been missed or has been changed since the last program, while keeping it relevant and educational. Social Service workers can create new ways to help the next generation avoid drugs and promote a healthy lifestyle, in a fun and interesting way. While these programs are usually taught in schools by teachers some times these programs could be brought into schools and run by Social Service workers, this also helps to make sure the programs are effective and are being run properly.

    Primary Prevention is almost exactly as it sounds, it is to prevent someone from developing a negative habit. Primary is because the problem or habit has not happened yet and it is to prevent that problem or habit from ever happening. Primary Prevention programs are put in place all over Canada in elementary schools, middle schools and high schools to educate our youth about the dangers they could face in day to day life.

    How a Social Service Worker may fit into this program would be to help facilitate the program in schools. While it is usually run by teachers, Social Service workers can oversee parts of the program and see if it is being run effectively and properly, as well as constantly trying to help improve the program. If there are any persistent worries the students may have they could also speak to the Social Service Worker to find guidance and clarification on the issues they may face.

    Primary Prevention Programs In Ontario
    There are many Primary Prevention programs held in Ontario to prevent future drug problems in youth and adults. Most are run by the Ontario Provincial Police or OPP such as Racing against Drugs, The D.A.R.E program and the Addictions Ontario. Because of the length of this assignment I will only be focusing on three primary prevention programs in Ontario.
    Racing{rad.png} Racing Against Drugs
    A social service worker would fit into Racing Against Drugs nicely. A social service worker may help set up the presentation and could possibly share their input during the presentation, depending on their personal experiences with working with drugs or alcohol. A social service worker can help show the kids good values and promote excellence to them.
    {dare.png}
    Another primary prevention program in Ontario as well as run by the OPP is the D.A.R.E program which stands for drug, abuse, resistance, and education. D.A.R.E’s mission is to “Teaching students good decision-making skills to help them lead safe and healthy lives” D.A.R.E wants to live in a world where everyone is empowered to respect others and choose to live lives free from violence , substance abuse, and other dangerous behaviours. D.A.R.E is a police officer led series of classroom lectures that teach youth from kindergarten all the way to grade 12 about living drug and violence free lives. They also teach kids to resist to peer pressure.
    There are many different things that a social service worker could do at D.A.R.E, they could help the audience get into groups and help with the activities that the O.P.P have planned for their audience. A social service worker may also answer questions that the audience has about drugs or alcohol and help the O.P.P with their overall presentation.
    {ao.jpg}
    Another Primary Prevention program is Addictions Ontario. Addictions Ontario or AO for short is a non profit organisation that provides information about drug abuse and addiction services. AO has been in existence for over forty years and provide early intervention, health prevention, promotion and treatment services. AO also has phone hotlines for drug and alcohol, gambling and mental health. AO provides help for all including youth and young addiction problems.
    A social service worker could help in AO by sharing their knowledge of drugs and addictions with the online community and help manage AO’s website. They could also help by assisting AO members in their intervention, health, treatment and promotion services.
